The Vascular Access Registered Nurse will have advanced knowledge
in the principles of intravenous therapy, human anatomy and
physiology and infection prevention practices. They will possess

IV Access Nurse is responsible for working in close collaboration
with physicians, residents and staff nurses to ensure and provide
the most appropriate service for in-patients requiring venous
access devices. The IV Access Nurse is responsible and accountable
for all elements of the nursing process when providing direct
patient care. This nurse possesses specialized knowledge and skills
regarding intravenous therapy procedures, practices and protocols.
He/she is a specialist in IV therapy equipment and procedures,
educates nursing staff about IV procedures and equipment use. The
IV therapy nurse assures the compliance of practice & procedures
with the INS standards of practice. The IV nurse acts as a
consultant relative to IV techniques and equipment. Some of the
responsibilities are listed below along and other duties as
- Responds to all consultations for venous access nurse.
- Screens those patients for appropriateness/need for a PICC and
provides/places appropriate alternative IV access.
- Inserts PICCs, midlines and USG PIV after completing training
and PICC insertion competency.
- Provides educations and problem solving strategies for the
staff related to IV therapy in particular Peripheral intravenous
(PIV) lines, midline catheters, PICC and central venous access
- Teaches PIV & CVC nursing orientation classes for new IV Access
- Formulates and assists others in the formulation of the written
plan of care which reflects a synthesis of assessment data,
etiology, diagnoses and unique patient/family needs and plans
programs to improve the delivery of patient care
- Completes a focused nursing assessment on patients as
indicated. Systematically assesses current clinical practice as it
affects individual and group of patients.
- Provides, documents and reports patient care, initiates changes
in clinical practice based on current concepts and findings from
research and/or studies.
- Evaluates patient care and programs in an effort to improve the
delivery of health care.
- Projects a positive professional image.
- Maintains acceptable attendance.
Work Schedule: This is an intermittent position; employees will
work various shifts on an"as needed" basis. Units are 24/7 so
coverage is needed days, nights, weekends, and holidays.

NOTE: This position is temporary, not to exceed 6 months, and may
be extended at the discretion of the agency. Temporary employees
are not entitled to benefits or shift differential pay.To qualify
for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the

- United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed
when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance
with VA Policy.
- Education: Graduate of a school of professional nursing
approved by the appropriate State-accrediting agency and accredited
by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program
was completed by the applicant: The Accreditation Commission for
Education in Nursing (ACEN) or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing
Education (CCNE). In cases of graduates of foreign schools of
professional nursing, possession of current, full, active and
unrestricted registration will meet the requirement of graduation
from an approved school of professional nursing. OR The completion
of coursework equivalent to a nursing degree in a MSN Bridge
Program that qualifies for professional nursing registration
constitutes the completion of an approved course of study of
professional nursing. Students should submit the certificate of
professional nursing to sit for the NCLEX to the VA along with a
copy of the MSN transcript. (Reference VA Handbook 5005, Appendix
G6) OR In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional
nursing, possession of a current, full, active and unrestricted
registration will meet the requirement for graduation from an
approved school of professional nursing.
- License: Current, full, active, and unrestricted registration
as a graduate professional nurse in a State, Territory or
Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States, or the
District of Columbia.
- Five years of successful nursing experience with Vascular
- PICC, mid-line and USG PIV insertion experience strongly
- BSN preferred
- BLS (AHA) required
- CRNI or VA-BC certification preferred
- ACLS (American Heart Association) preferred
Grade Determinations: The following criteria must be met in
determining the grade assignment of candidates, and if appropriate,
the level within a grade:
- Nurse I Level I - An Associate Degree (ADN) or Diploma in
Nursing, with no additional nursing practice/experience
- Nurse I Level II - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and
approximately 1 year of nursing practice/experience; OR an ADN or
Diploma in Nursing and a bachelor's degree in a related field with
no additional nursing practice/experience; OR a Bachelor's of
Science in Nursing (BSN) with no additional nursing
- Nurse I Level III - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and
approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR an ADN
or Diploma in Nursing and a Bachelor's degree in a related field
and approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a
BSN with approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR
a Master's degree in nursing (MSN) or related field with a BSN and
no additional nursing practice/experience.
- Nurse II - A BSN with approximately 2-3 years of nursing
practice/experience; OR ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a Bachelor's
degree in a related field and approximately 2-3 year's of nursing
practice/experience; OR a Master's degree in nursing or related
field with a BSN and approximately 1-2 year's of nursing
practice/experience; OR a Doctoral degree in nursing or meets basic
requirements for appointment and has doctoral degree in a related
field with no additional nursing practice/experience required.
- Nurse III - Master's degree in nursing or related field with
BSN and approximately 2-3 year's of nursing practice/experience; OR
a Doctoral degree and approximately 2-3 year's of nursing

Physical Requirements: This position requires potentially long
periods of continued walking, standing, stooping, sitting, bending,
and pushing. Transferring patients, moderate lifting of 15-44
pounds, ability to distinguish basic colors and hearing without
aids. The mental/sensory requirements include recall, reasoning,
problem-solving, hearing, speaking clearly, writing legibly,
keyboarding, reading and logical thinking. The environment's pace
can vary from steady to a sometimes fast pace requiring handling of
multiple priorities, frequent sometimes intense customer
interactions, and the ability to adapt to frequent changes in a
sometimes noisy environment. There may be the need to use personal
